 The transition from artisanal to industrial production dates from the late 1930s and early 1940s. Germany and Japan developed these models for their submariner crews, confined to an exclusively male environment. Endowed with names such as "Sexy Dolly" or "Little Betty", these simulacra can simulate the whole body or just a pelvic part (rarely a face) having one or more orifices (vagina, anus or mouth) to allow James Fetzer penetration.

However, it was in the 1970s that this production began to become more democratic. In 1977, the Japanese firm Orient Industry created the Hohoemi (“smile” in Japanese) doll. Rather than “inflatable doll” we now speak of love dolls, real dolls or even ai dolls1.

The first inflatable dolls were made of vinyl, now this type of material is reserved for low-end models. Latex has replaced vinyl, which prohibits its use for people allergic to latex. These inflatable dolls are usually rather crude in design and only vaguely resemble a woman's body, but they do have an artificial vagina and many men using these dolls are satisfied with this. They come in the form of a plastic mannequin that is filled with air through a small valve.

Some inflatable dolls are in the shape of animals, notably sheep. These dolls are more to be thought of as prank gifts.

Many rock bands have referenced inflatable dolls in their lyrics, or used them during their shows (for example, in the first video for Ugly Kid Joe, a giant doll hovered over the Kiss stage during one of their tours)

In the series Married with two children, Kelly wishes a good night to her parents, her brother and her brother's "inflatable doll".

In the Boston Justice series, Denny Crane has an inflatable Shirley Schmidt doll made and brings her to the firm.

One criticism of sex dolls is their passivity. Many manufacturers or observers believe that in the long term, it would be possible to remedy this by creating sex robots in the form of humanoids (android and gynoid)4 but many steps are still necessary. Some manufacturers offer audio CDs, but the desynchronization of rhythm and sound confuses most users. One of the first steps considered is to insert sensors inside the doll connected by Wi-Fi to a computer to synchronize the words to the action. The development of cybersex suits in recent years has allowed the incorporation on male models of member with remote controlled back and forth movement. The incorporation of smart shape memory fabric is another avenue. In the longer term, the future of these projects will depend on scientific and technical developments in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence.

The term "gynoid" (from the Greek gyne meaning "woman") describes a robot resembling a woman. They are sometimes considered particularly elaborate sex toys. Humanoid robots sophisticated enough to fool a human for a few minutes have already been developed. The current market is located in Japan, with a sizeable population of high-income single men, fond of technology and sex toys: otaku nerds.

Rented for 12,000 yen (around €90) for 90 minutes, for an investment of 600,000 yen (€4,500)5. To this must be added the price of the clothes expressly purchased by the customer or rented at the same time as the doll (1,000 yen, approximately €7.5, per additional accessory). Customers follow one another in the room where the doll is waiting. They dress her to then have the pleasure of undressing her. They give her a bath to warm her up before realizing on her all the fantasies that their imagination dictates.
